Associations & Magazines Are Great Sources of Industry Information

In this section we have gathered some of the most popular information sources, such as trade journals, magazines, blogs, and association websites. Industry information is always changing. For the latest news, current issues and popular opinions, try following one or more of these sources. In addition, interacting with the websites that provide this information through commenting and asking questions may also provide you with more information.

Associations

Trade associations often publish free industry newsletters that are excellent sources of information for your business plan. Such newsletters often have articles that cover in-depth topics on business management, manufacturing practices, how-tos, and current industry news.

Construction Maintenance and Allied Workers (CMAW) | The CMAW is the largest union representing construction workers in British Columbia, with over 7000 members including carpenters, carpenter apprentices, lathers, millwrights, floorlayers, piledrivers, industrial workers and many other construction trades. Canadian Association of Skilled Trades BC (CASTBC) | CAST is a new workers' representation union, whose parent organization is the United Brotherhood of Carpenters. Check out their Resources page.

United Brotherhood of Carpenters (UBC) | The UBC is North America’s largest building-trades union, with more than a half-million members in the construction and wood-products industries. Check out the One Trade, Many Crafts page. 

Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) is Canada’s national housing agency. Check out free publication and reports. Don't miss their Forecasts and Analysis reports.

Canadian Construction Association (CCA) | Check out the Industy Practices section, as well as the Industry Statistics.

British Columbia Construction Association (BCCA) | Useful information covering all areas of the BC construction industry. Check out the resources page for valuable reports on the industry.

Canadian Home Builders' Association (CHBA) | Information on new home building and home renovations.

Use this directory to search for an association by name, interest area, or international geographic location (including Canada and BC). You can also search using a combination of various fields.

Magazines / Trade Journals

Trade journals (often called magazines or trade publications) can be very useful in helping you find current articles relating to business research. Contact your local research library to determine which trade journal subscriptions they have. There are also free trade publications that you can access online. 

Builder Magazine
Home building industry magazine with information on the building trade, technology and marketing. Published monthly.

Canadian Woodworking Magazine
Canadian Woodworking features tips, plans, tool reviews, and articles focused exclusively on woodworking. Published 6 times per year.

Fine Woodworking
Magazine that focuses on all aspects of the woodworking industry. Published 7 times per year.

Home Builder Magazine
Official magazine of the Canadian Home Builders' Association (CHBA) with a focus on residential construction and home improvement. Published bi-monthly.

The Journal of Light Construction
Magazine aimed at hands-on builders and remodelers. Published monthly.
