In this section we have gathered some of the most popular information sources, such as trade journals, magazines, blogs, and association websites. Industry information is always changing. For the latest news, current issues and popular opinions, try following one or more of these sources. In addition, interacting with the websites that provide this information through commenting and asking questions may also provide you with more information.


Trade associations often publish free industry newsletters that are excellent sources of information for your business plan. Such newsletters often have articles that cover in-depth topics on business management, manufacturing practices, how-tos, and current industry news.

Canadian Home Furnishing Alliance (CHFA) | The CHFA is a not-for-profit trade association representing manufacturers, importers and distributors of furniture, furnishings, fixtures, accessories and suppliers to the industry. Check out the Industry Links page for useful links.

Wood Manufacturing Council (WMC) | The WMC collaborates with employers, workers, educators, professional associations and government to help implement human resources solutions that will ensure the success of the advanced wood manufacturing sector. Check out the Reports section for useful market reports.

The Business and Institutional Furniture Manufacturer's Association (BIFMA) | BIFMA’s mission is to lead, advocate, inform and develop standards for the North American office and institutional furniture industry. Check out the Member Resources page for links. You must be a member to access most information on the site.

Magazines & Trade Journals

Trade journals (often called magazines or trade publications) can be very useful in helping you find current articles relating to business research. Contact your local research library to determine which trade journal subscriptions they have. There are also free trade publications that you can access online. 

Canadian Woodworking Magazine | Canadian Woodworking features tips, plans, tool reviews, and articles focused exclusively on woodworking. Published 6 times per year.

furniturelink | Canadian online publication that focuses on contemporary furniture design and sustainable manufacturing in Canada and beyond.

Fine Woodworking | Magazine that focuses on all aspects of the woodworking industry. Published 7 times per year.

Furniture Today | An online resource and weekly business newspaper aimed at  the furniture industry. Features current events, who's who, industry trends and research information.

Furniture World | The home furnishings industry's premier furniture trade publication. Past issues are available on their site in digital e-magazine format.


Popular Woodworking Editor's Blog | This blog is regularly updated with content from the editors of Popular Woodworking Magazine, including hands-on advice, tips, and woodworking techniques.

Fine Furniture Maker Blog | Updated a few times a month, this blog is run by Rowden Atelier furniture school, While it does have many posts related to their school, there is also good information on construction and industry tips. 

Top 100 Carpentry Blogs | A collection of both residential and commercial carpentry blogs.

Discussion Forums

Wood Web Furniture Makers Forum | A small forum, but regularly updated. Users offer advice and discuss everything from design, to tools to construction logistics.

Product Design | Product Design Forums is an online community of industrial designers. The discussion forums are arranged by specific design topics.

Design Addict Forum | "Design Addict's forum with general discussions on design, architecture, art where a helpful community provides advice about restoration and an online shop."

Consultant Websites

MarketWatch - Industry Analyzer
The Industries section contains current data on Dow Jones Industry Sectors. Aggregate data as well as company-specific data is available.

Vault Industry Profiles
A free source of industry information. Use the Industry Profiles to research news, company information, and industry-specific sample professions. Basic monthly membership is free and offers access to blogs, discussion forums, and job listings.
