Industry News

In this section we have gathered some of the most popular information sources, such as trade journals, magazines, blogs, and association websites. Industry information is always changing. For the latest news, current issues and popular opinions, try following one or more of these sources. In addition, interacting with the websites that provide this information through commenting and asking questions may also provide you with more information.

Associations

Trade associations often publish free industry newsletters that are excellent sources of information for your business plan. Such newsletters often have articles that cover in-depth topics on business management, manufacturing practices, how-tos, and current industry news.

Canadian Associations

  • BC Non-Profit Housing Association | Their mission is to strengthen BC’s non-profit housing sector through advocacy, education and support. They offer high-quality professional development opportunities, member programs that help housing providers operate more efficiently, and industry-leading events that foster collaboration across the community housing sector.
  • The Federation of Community Social Services of BC | Since 1982, they’ve been strengthening and supporting BC’s community services sector by networking, exchanging information, building skills and by consistently bringing a balanced perspective to discussions with provincial and national decision makers.
  • Vancity Community Foundation | Leverage financial tools, provide innovative support to non-profit organizations, and advocate for policies that help make life more affordable through their various projects.
  • Imagine Canada | Through advocacy efforts, sector research, capacity-building resources, and services, Imagine Canada supports charities and nonprofits so they can better serve communities both here and around the world.
  • Community Foundations of Canada | The national leadership organization for Canada’s over 200 local community foundations. Together with community foundations across the country, they help drive local solutions for national change on the issues that matter most to communities.

International Associations

  • National Council of Nonprofits | The largest network of nonprofits in North America. They champion, inform, and connect organizations across the country to score big wins for nonprofits and the communities they serve.
  • Society for Nonprofits | A leading resource for nonprofit professionals and has been helping nonprofit leaders increase their knowledge and grow the capacity of their organizations for more than 30 years.
  • Candid | A nonprofit that provides the most comprehensive data and insights about the social sector.

Magazines & Trade Journals

Trade associations often publish free industry newsletters that are excellent sources of information for business planning. Such newsletters often have articles that cover in-depth topics on business management, manufacturing practices, how-tos, and current industry news.

  • Nonprofit Quarterly | NPQ uses a range of media channels to help advance critical conversations that can refine nonprofit and social movement policy and practice.
  • Stanford Social Innovation Review | SSIR’s mission is to advance, educate, and inspire the field of social innovation by seeking out, cultivating, and disseminating the best in research- and practice-based knowledge.
  • The Philanthropist Journal | An online journal for those interested and engaged in the charitable and non-profit sector in Canada.
  • Nonprofit Management & Leadership | A quarterly peer-reviewed journal that publishes quality scholarship on all aspects of management and leadership important to nonprofit organizations and leaders.
  • Nonprofit World Magazine | Nonprofit World is a bi-monthly magazine - published since 1983 - that provides nonprofit leaders with concise and practical articles whose advice can be easily implemented.

Consultant & Other Websites

Gail Perry Group | Since 1994, Gail Perry Group has partnered with nonprofits of all shapes, sizes and missions to help them reach their goals and beyond. 

The Bridgespan Group | A global nonprofit that advises philanthropists, nonprofit and NGO leaders, and impact investors. Their services include strategy consulting and advising, sourcing and diligence, and leadership team support.

Laridae | Founded in 2012, Laridae is a management consulting and training firm that works solely with non-profits. Their resources page includes case studies, news, and podcast episodes.

Nonprofit Finance Fund | Through capital, consulting, and advocacy, NFF boosts the collective success and power of nonprofits to advance racial equity and community wealth and well-being. 

MarketWatch - Industry Analyzer | The Industries section contains current data on Dow Jones Industry Sectors. Aggregate data as well as company-specific data is available.

PriceWaterhouse Coopers Canada (PwC) | Global consultancy firm that produces reports on the state of various industries.

Firsthand | A free source of industry information. Use the Industry Profiles to research growing industries and best industries by major, and Company Rankings and Profiles to find news, company information, and industry-specific sample professions. Basic monthly membership is free and offers access to blogs, discussion forums, and job listings.

Skilled Immigrant InfoCentre | This free resource created by the Vancouver Public Library is an online and in-person resource that helps newcomers to Canada find information to get a job, explore different careers or start a business.

Blogs, Podcasts & Discussion Forums 

  • Nonprofit Industry Overview | This sample market research blog, prepared by our business librarians, provides a general industry overview and illustrates what you can gain from market research. For more current and relevant information, continue following this guide — it will lead you to industry-specific resources to help you carry out your own market research. 
  • Successful Nonprofits Podcast | Each week, Dolph interviews nonprofit experts and leaders who share their experiences and wisdom on a wide range of topics relevant to the nonprofit sector. From fundraising and board development to leadership and strategic planning, and more!
  • We Are For Good Podcast | Join Jon McCoy, CFRE and Becky Endicott, CFRE as they learn from some of the best in the nonprofit industry.
  • The Nonprofit Podcast | Interviews with innovative thought-leaders, influencers, and the committed, hardworking people who shape the nonprofit sector bring you insights and inspiration from the path less traveled.
  • Nonprofit AF | Written by Vu Lu, the former Executive Director of RVC, a nonprofit in Seattle that promotes social justice by developing leaders of color, strengthening organizations led by communities of color, and fostering collaboration among diverse communities.
  • NonProfit Pro | Offers a website and daily e-newsletter, NonProfit PRO Today, that caters to modern nonprofit professionals. Topics range from internal issues such as human resources, board and volunteer management to technology to tax and legal matters, news and, of course, raising funds.
  • Nonprofit Leadership Alliance | NLA strengthens the social sector through a talented and prepared workforce.
  • Nonprofit Tech for Good | A digital marketing and fundraising resource for nonprofits, providing useful, easy-to-understand news updates and resources related to digital marketing and fundraising.
